TripAdvisor forays into Indian market
Jyoti Koul - New Delhi
Just a month after Expedia confirmed its India presence, its operating company
TripAdvisor, has made its foray into the Asian market. While Sharat Dhall, ex-MD
of Expedia India, is the new MD of TripAdvisor, Arthur Hoffman is the new MD
of Expedia Asia Pacific and will be responsible for the four Expedia-branded
points of sale in APAC.
The company is currently working on its India site. Says Dhall, "We need
to localise the site for Indian users and are in the process of making certain
modifications as per the market requirements. We want to get into the market
as soon as possible and we need a few months to get into action."
The company has also revealed plans to launch a multi-site
travel search engine - BookingBuddy - in India by the end of this year. TripAdvisor
claims to have six million registered members and 15 million reviews and opinions
featuring advice from experienced travellers. It is not based on a transaction
model or a booking engine but a user-generated, content-based model. As per
sources, booking sites like MakeMyTrip.com, Yatra and Cleartrip will be its
partners.
- Eurostar to be part of BSP by 2009 in
India. Will be available for bookings through GDS
- Ireland's Chase Travel to set base in
India by July 2008, headquartered in New Delhi
- Destination Britain to be held in India
in May 2009
