General Manager - Mumbai, Thai Airways

Star Alliance member, Thai Airways has increased frequencies from Delhi and Chennai to Bangkok and is on its way to subsequently increasing frequency from Mumbai. In a conversation with Express TravelWorld, Yutthanai Piamprom, general manager - Mumbai, Thai Airways, said, "The Indian market is of high focus for us and we plan to facilitate the travellers by supporting the aviation needs between the two countries (India and Taiwan)."

According to its expansion plan:

  • From May 2, 2008, the frequency on the Chennai-Bangkok route increased from four to seven
  • Frequency on the Delhi-Bangkok route increased to 11 flights per week [four flights were added] from May 16, 2008
  • The Mumbai-Bangkok route will see a rise from seven to ten flights from July 1, 2008.

The carrier operates ten flights per week from Bengaluru, five flights per week from Hyderabad, seven flights per week from Kolkata and two flights per week from Varanasi, which increases to five flights per week during the 'season'. "With Varanasi, we are able to connect the South East Asian travellers who want to travel to the Buddhist destinations. On the whole, in 2008 we want six lakh flyers from India on the airlines as opposed to 5.06 lakh flyers in 2007," Piamprom mentioned.

For better connectivity to traffic from tier II and III cities in the country, the airline is now in talks with domestic full-service carriers - Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways - for domestic code-sharing besides the existing agreements with Indian and Air India (NACIL).

Apart from this, the airline is working very closely with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in promoting various destinations of Thailand, and according to the GM, a familiarisation trip for the travel trade is being planned during July-August to Ko Samui and Chienmai.
