Continental To Connect India-US Non-Stop

Jyoti Koul - New Delhi

Continental Airlines recently announced their intent of servicing the India route, however, the airline is yet to 'receive' government approval. The initiative was proposed keeping in mind the lack of potential traffic flow between India and US. Once necessary government approvals are sought, the airline plans to provide non-stop flights between New Delhi and New York and in all probability, will commence operations by November, this year.

Continental intends to service the India route with Boeing 777 aircraft and achieve a load factor of about 75 per cent initially. The flying time will be approximately 15 hours, 50 minutes westbound and 13 hours, 55 minutes eastbound that will certainly help save about two hours flying time.

Even though the airline did not disclose the air fare, it will provide one-stop connection to as many as 150 other cities throughout North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and beyond via Continental's unique New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport. Significant revenue is also expected through this new service.

Connecting India, especially New Delhi to the US is considered to be a successful route and once it establishes the link, the airline will look at other destinations in the country as far as operations are concerned. Commenting further on the offerings to the Indian clientele, Jim Summerford, vice- president, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Continental Airlines, said, " We will be able to offer Indian trans-Atlantic travellers something none of our competitors can even match. Quick and easy same airline, same terminal onward connections to cities throughout the Americas. And finally, our service will create a more convenient and attractive gateway to India for American visitors."
