Paravoor - Rich Heritage, Forgotten With Time
Paravoor located about 15 kms from Kochi has a lot of tourism potential. Geographically,
Paravoor's proximity to the beach and backwaters makes swimming, surfing and
boating exciting possibilities. Its unique track record of electric and secular
influences accounts for a number of historical palaces and monuments. It is
famous for its handlooms (Chendamangalam Handloom) and has the best Khadi village
in the country. Narrow canals through coconut grooves, showcase the typical
Kerala village lifestyle.
Some of the tourist attractions in this paradise include Kottayil Kovilakkom,
which is a run down fort, surrounding a small dune. It also has a Sri Krishna
Temple at its crest, the Holy Cross church (remains of the fort can be seen
here), the Juma Masjid and a ruined Jewish Synagogue. The Kottakavu Ferona Church
is a story of a revered Namboodri awe struck by the miracle shown by Saint Thomas,
who then converted his temple to this church and became a Christian himself.
Part of the temple is still maintained along with the pool.
Palliyam Palace is another must see sight here. The interiors of this Palace
were done up by the Dutch in favour of the Achan (a title given to Nairs) for
their role in helping the Dutch during battle time. The Pallipuram Church is
where the faithful prayed to Virgin Mary to defend them from the advancing armies
of Tipu Sultan. It is said that Virgin Mary heard their prayer and a miracle
happened with thick snow falling, forcing Tipu Sultan to retreat. Out of the
two Mookambika Temples in India, one exists in Paravoor. The other is in Kollur,
Karnataka. The 2000 years old Arayankavu Temple is also located here.
Paravoor also has the largest natural Backwater lakes in South Asia. Cherai
Beach and Cherai Backwaters is rich in sealife and fishing here is permitted
on applying for permits. It also has facilities for leisure boating, pedal boats,
row boats etc.
